Composer, librettist and sound designer Ari Frankel is a composition graduate of Tel Aviv University's Academy of Music. From opera (Lot's Daughters And Their Father ) through new-age (Suzanne Ciani's Neverland , Private Music) to contemporary solo piano (SHATTERED, hymns for mortal creatures , BiCameral Records) his film, electronic and orchestral scores have gained kudos in Europe and America, including The Bourges International Electroacoustic Festival and The International Film & TV Festival of New York.Since his move to New York City in 1987, he has explored themes from The Tibetan Book Of The Dead, T.S. Eliot's ( The Waste Land ), Anne Sexton and many others. Collaborators have included Muna Tseng Dance Projects, John Kelly & Co., The Actors Studio and the LaMama Theater. Among Mr. Frankel's compositions are Robert Redford and Michael Apted's documentary film Incident At Oglala , Rebo Studio's High-Definition Talking Pictures , Passage To Vietnam and The White House: Inside With The President's Photographers and The Atlantic Theater's Down The Shore , directed by William H. Macy.
The New York Times described one work for dance as a 'haunting collage of sounds, original and popular music". The Glasgow Herald felt "true passion" in another and The London Times marveled at "light seeming materials build[ing] an overwhelming effect". Ma'Ariv exclaimed "Frankel touches the angels!" and The Village Voice explained his "emotionally charged original music" as "wonderfully poignant and plangent".
Ari Frankel's music has been heard in Chicago, Houston, Princeton, Los Angeles, England, France, Italy, Germany, Israel, Japan and Poland. New York performances have included The Kitchen, Dia Center For The Arts, SummerStage at Central Park and Washington Square Church. Since August 2000 he lives in Boston.
